Monster Matcha Balls Recipe

Let’s energize our Halloween festivities with some Monster Matcha Balls! These little bites are perfect for a morning boost or to keep the energy levels high during your Halloween party. Matcha not only gives these energy balls a vibrant green colour but also provides a calm focus thanks to its L-theanine content. It’s a fantastic way to kick off the day or keep everyone fueled during Halloween festivities!

One important note: This recipe is not suitable for kids because of the caffeine in matcha.

Monster Matcha Ball by Jesse Lane Lee

I love creating Halloween recipes that are fun enough to get everyone excited while still being made with simple, wholesome ingredients. Halloween does not have to be all candy and sugary treats. There is plenty of room for nourishing snacks that still feel festive.

These Monster Matcha Balls are a great example. They are naturally green from matcha, have a delicious coconut texture, and can be decorated with candy eyes or mini chocolate chips to turn them into little Halloween monsters. They are also incredibly easy to make. You only need about 10 minutes of prep time, then they go into the freezer for an hour to set.

Whether you are looking for a quick breakfast bite, an afternoon snack, or something fun to serve at an adult Halloween gathering, these Monster Matcha Balls are a simple option to have ready in the fridge or freezer.

Monster Matcha Balls Recipe

Gluten-Free & Nut-Free

Prep time: 10 minutes | Inactive prep: 1 hour | Serving size: 12 balls

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut, divided
  • 1 tbsp white chia seeds
  • 2 tsp melted coconut oil
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp matcha powder
  • ½ lemon, juice roughly ¼ cup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt

Directions

  1. Place 1 cup of shredded coconut and chia seeds in a food processor and blend until powdered.
  2. Add the coconut oil, honey, matcha, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt and process until well combined. Add remaining shredded coconut and pulse until just combined.
  3. Shape into 12 (1-inch) balls and freeze for at least an hour to set. Store in the fridge or freezer and enjoy cold or at room temperature.
  4. If you are making monsters, “glue” on candy eyes or mini chocolate chips with partially melted coconut oil.

NOTE: I’m obsessed with matcha, and I like to be able to taste a touch of bitterness. If you are new to matcha, I suggest using 1 tbsp of matcha powder and adding 1/4 cup of honey to make them sweeter.

Health Benefits of Matcha

Matcha is what gives these energy balls their bright green colour, but it also brings some nutritional benefits to the recipe. Matcha is made by grinding green tea leaves into a fine powder, meaning you consume the whole tea leaf rather than steeping and removing it.

One of the things I love about matcha is that it contains both caffeine and L-theanine. Caffeine can provide a natural boost in energy, while L-theanine is an amino acid that is associated with a calm, focused feeling. This combination is one reason matcha can feel different from other caffeinated drinks. Matcha is also a source of antioxidants called catechins. Antioxidants help protect our cells from oxidative stress, making matcha a simple way to add more antioxidant-rich foods to your day.

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

Chia seeds may be tiny, but they pack a lot of nutrition into a small amount. They are a source of fibre, plant-based protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, calcium, and magnesium. The fibre in chia seeds is especially helpful for making snacks more satisfying. Fibre can also support healthy digestion and help add some staying power to these little energy balls.

Chia seeds are also one of my favourite ingredients to add to simple recipes because they are so easy to use. You do not need much to get their nutritional benefits, and they blend easily into recipes like smoothies, overnight oats, puddings, and energy balls.

Health Benefits of Coconut

Coconut gives these Monster Matcha Balls their delicious texture and subtle sweetness. Unsweetened shredded coconut also provides fibre and fat, helping make these little bites more satisfying.

Coconut is a versatile ingredient that works especially well in no-bake recipes like energy balls. It helps create a chewy texture while adding a naturally sweet flavour that pairs nicely with the earthy flavour of matcha. I recommend using unsweetened shredded coconut in this recipe since the honey already provides sweetness. This keeps the recipe simple while allowing the flavours of the matcha, lemon, and vanilla to come through.

Benefits of Making Your Own Snacks

One of my favourite things about homemade snacks is being able to choose the ingredients that go into them. When you make your own energy balls, you can skip the long ingredient lists and customize the recipe to your preferences.

This recipe is a great example of how simple homemade snacks can be. You only need a handful of ingredients, a food processor, and a little freezer space. They are also easy to make ahead. Prepare a batch when you have a few extra minutes, store them in the fridge or freezer, and you have a quick snack ready whenever you need one.

Having nourishing options prepared ahead of time can make healthy eating feel much easier, especially during busy weeks. Instead of reaching for whatever is most convenient, you already have something ready to go.
