Halloween Apple Monsters Recipe by Jesse Lane Lee

Halloween Apple Monsters Recipe

Gluten-free | Vegan | Nut-free

Prep time: 25 minutes | Serving size: 8-12

Ingredients

  • 2 green apples
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • 3 tbsp sunflower seed butter
  • 3 strawberries, sliced
  • ¼ cup raw unsalted sunflower seeds
  • 16 candy eyes or mini chocolate chips.

Directions

  1. Cut both apples into quarters or sixths depending on the size. Remove the core. Cut a slice out of each section to make a mouth. Brush all of the surfaces with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. Spread the sunflower seed butter along the inside of each apple, aka the mouth.
  3. Place a strawberry slice along the bottom of the mouth to make a tongue.
  4. Press the pointed end of the sunflower seeds along the top of the mouth to make teeth and along the bottom of the mouth where there isn’t a tongue. If it is too hard to press the seeds into the apple, use a knife to score the apple first.
  5. Place a little bit of sunflower seed butter on the back of the candy eyes or mini chocolate chips and place them above the mouth.

NOTE: This recipe uses sunflower seeds and sunflower seed butter to make it school-safe. You can also make it with your favourite nut butter and use almond slivers for the teeth.

Health Benefits of Apples

Get ready to unleash a monstrous dose of nutrition with our Halloween Apple Monsters! These spooky treats aren’t just fun and delicious; they also come packed with nutritional benefits that will keep your little ghouls and ghosts feeling their best.

First off, apples are bursting with water, fibre, and pectin, which not only help with digestion but also nourish the friendly gut bacteria lurking within. Each serving boasts 1 gram of protein, making them a perfect addition to your Halloween feast and ensuring a balanced diet. And that’s not all; apples are brimming with essential vitamins and minerals, contributing to your overall well-being.

Want to boost your kiddo’s vitamin C intake during cold and flu season? Apples have got you covered. This powerhouse nutrient boosts your immune system, ensuring you’re ready to fend off any spooky ailments that might come your way. It’s also your secret weapon for maintaining that glowing, healthy Halloween skin. But the magic doesn’t stop there; apples are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory flavonoids, which are like protective spells guarding against spooky diseases.

So, when you’re munching on these Halloween Apple Monsters, remember, it’s not just a fun snack; it’s a nutritious treat that might just keep the monsters – and the doctors – away!

Health Benefits of Sunflower Seeds

Let’s talk about the bewitching power of sunflower seeds and sunflower butter in our Halloween Apple Monsters.

Sunflower seeds are like nature’s wizardry when it comes to nut substitutions. Their nutty taste is a fantastic alternative for those with peanut or nut allergies. They’re the perfect swap for a school-safe spooktacular treat!

But the magic doesn’t stop there! They’re rich in vitamin E, a potent antioxidant that possesses formidable anti-inflammatory powers. This is like a magical potion that can ease inflammatory conditions like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis, making it a powerful ally for your health.

Sunflower seeds also hide a secret weapon – vitamin B1. When combined with vitamin E, it creates a shield that safeguards mental function, reducing the risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s.

Sunflower seeds also contain hefty doses of protein, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and so much more! Who knew so much nutrition could come in such a tiny delicious package?!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups used to be my Halloween candy obsession. After chilly trick-or-treating nights, my sisters and I gathered our candy haul and huddled for trades. But when I discovered their scary ingredients, like GM soy and preservatives, I crafted a guilt-free alternative. Healthy Peanut Butter Cups with a creamy sunflower seed butter core in a stevia-sweetened carob shell that melts in your mouth. Sweetened with a touch of salt and boasting caramel undertones, the carob and sunflower butter combo is a heavenly match!
