How to Shop for Produce: Organic vs Conventional vs Local Video

Today I’m going to explain the difference between organic, conventional and local produce.

A lot of my clients ask me what the difference is and I like to focus on two things:

  1. Pesticide residue found in organic vs conventional vs local produce
  2. Nutrient value of organic vs conventional vs local produce

Cost is also something a lot of my clients worry about, especially when they are on a tight budget. At the end of the video, I talk about how to buy the best produce for you and your family on a budget.

The study conducted at Newcastle University in the UK found:

Organic crops, on average, have higher concentrations of antioxidants, lower concentrations of Cd and a lower incidence of pesticide residues than the non-organic comparators across regions and production seasons.

Here is a link to the study.

The Environmental Working Group has also pored over the results of nearly 51,000 USDA and FDA tests for pesticides on 44 popular produce items and identified the types of fruits and vegetables that were most likely to have higher trace amounts. Find out more on their website.

There are lots of questions when it comes to buying animal products as well.

What does grass-fed, free-range, free-run, grain-fed, natural, anti-biotic free, … even mean!?!

The people who market these products use such creative slogans on the products, it is really hard to know what is actually good! I get asked about this a lot so I’m going to do another video all about it, stay tuned.
