I’m all about eating a whole foods diet and getting our nourishment from food, but many of us don’t eat enough oily fish to get enough Omega-3s. The fish oil from oily fish contains two very important Omega-3s: EPA and DHA. Fish oil is best known for its role in cognitive health, cardiovascular health, and reducing inflammation.
Fish oil is like food for your brain
Fish oil is vital for healthy brain function and development in adults and babies. It helps clear brain fog and can improve memory.
DHA is also a key supplement during pregnancy. DHA is an Omega-3 long-chain fatty acid that is found in the grey matter of the brain and the retina of the eye. Babies in utero cannot produce their own DHA and have to get it from the placenta. DHA is important because it plays a vital role in your baby’s brain and eye development. It can also help decrease post-partum depression and mama brain.
Fish oil is great for your heart health
Fish Oil increases HDL cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol and lowers triglycerides. It can also help reduce blood pressure.
Fish oil reduces inflammation
Fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Fish oil can reduce joint pain and stiffness in people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.
Fish oil supplement I take
When I first started taking fish oil 15 years ago, it was so stinky I had to keep it triple bagged so my house didn’t stink of fish. Thankfully, health food stores now sell odourless fish oil capsules.
The fish oil I’m currently taking is NutraSea+D. I recommend taking vitamin D during the colder months when we don’t get enough sun, so I like that this brand adds it to their fish oil. It comes in capsule form, which makes it really easy to take. I find with some fish oils I get really gross fish burps, but for some reason, I don’t with this brand.
It is made from high-quality natural plant and fish ingredients. To make things even better, 1% of all the Ascenta Health products sales go to various environmental causes and organizations.
Fish oil supplement I give my baby
Babies need DHA for healthy development. Just like in adults, fish oil supports healthy brain, eye, and nervous system development in babies. I really like Nordic Naturals Baby’s DHA because it is lab-tested and surpasses strict international standards for purity and freshness.
It comes in a dropper and my baby loves it! His eyes light up whenever I bring it out at the end of his breakfast. To me, it tastes pretty fishy, but my baby doesn’t seem to mind.
