Healthy Restaurants in Los Angeles Part 2
In Healthy Restaurants in Los Angeles Part 2 I review Urth Caffe, SunCafe, Open Source Organics and Bliss Café. I hope you enjoyed Healthy Restaurants in Los Angeles Part 1 where I reviewed Café Gratitude, Seed, Native Foods Café and Planet Raw. At the end of the post I’ll list all of the places I wanted to try out but didn’t get a chance to visit.
Urth Caffé
Urth Caffe is known for its amazing fair trade organic coffee. When I arrived around lunch time the cafe was bustling, making it apparent that it is a very popular spot.
The Nori Plum Rice Wrap is generously stuffed with avocado, organic brown rice, carrots, broccoli, green onions, Umeboshi plum paste and five spice tofu. It is served cut into 6 rolls, making it very similar to sushi. The salty nori, crunchy veggies and umeboshi plum paste successfully mimic the sushi flavors while remaining lighter then traditional sushi. The wraps come with a simple fresh side salad that is topped with a tangy dressing.
The Urth Salad is a large and satisfying salad with locally grown mixed greens that is topped with feta cheese, Roma tomatoes, hearts of palm, garbanzo beans, Kalamata olives and pine nuts. The salad comes dressed in smooth vinaigrette that brings all of the flavors together.
SunCafe
The SunCafe is an amazing healthy restaurant in Los Angeles that serves raw and cooked dishes that are all vegan and organic. Most of the menu items and all the desserts are gluten free! I suggest starting your meal with a fresh young coconut full of sweet coconut water that is cracked to order. After you are done sipping the refreshing nectar, don’t forget to use a spoon to scoop out the supple young coconut meat.
Lettuce Leaf Tacos are made by topping romaine lettuce leaves with SunCafe’s signature nut based SunChorizo, creamy cashew cheese, pico de gallo, smooth avocado, green onion, crunchy pecan pieces and a basil ranch dressing that gives the tacos extra flavor. The SunChorizo is slightly spicy with the perfect spice blend and texture which gives it a meaty taco feel.
The Supreme Pizza with raw SunCrust is a playful raw vegan alternative to pizza. Although the pizza crust is little too thick and crunchy, the rustic marinara and SunChorizo make up for it in flavour. The Supreme Pizza is also topped with fresh tomatoes, marinated bell peppers, marinated onions and zesty cashew cheese. The hummus and pita that come with the meal as a side dish is fantastic; the hummus is smooth and the pita is soft and fresh.
The Fiesta Burger is a nut based raw SunBurger topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, nacho cheese and jalapenos. The SunBurger is tasty but a little too thick and it is piled high with spicy jalapenos give it a kick! The burger comes on several types of buns: fluffy whole wheat, sesame sprouted whole wheat, raw bun, raw lettuce leaf and gluten-free bun. The raw bun, which is really more of a cracker, has great flavors but makes for a very messy meal. The kale salad that comes as a side dish is one of the best side salads I have ever had. The kale is perfectly messaged and marinated to remove the bitterness and it is topped with fresh tomato, crunchy pecan pieces and a delicious basil ranch dressing.
Open Source Organics
Open Source Organics carries 15 vibrant juices that are made to order. I really enjoyed the Liver Life and Cleanse. The Apple Pie Smoothie is thick and delicious, hitting all the classic apple pie flavors. The dessert balls are fun portable treats that satisfy your sweet tooth without any added sugar. Open Source Organics has lots of super food add-ins like Chlorella, Maca, Shilajit and Spirulina but they don’t carry protein powder, so bring your own it you want a hunger satisfying meal rather than a snack.
Bliss Café
Bliss Café is a funky café nestled in the picturesque coastal town of San Luis Obispo. It offers a delicious “yogi style, karma free” vegan menu that provides healthy options for those seeking a conscious and compassionate life style.
The Curry Style Burrito is bursting with beans, rice, red cabbage, amazing curry, smooth hummus, spicy fruit chutney, tomatoes, cilantro and lemon juice. I enjoyed it “unwrapped” in a big bowl which is comfort food at its best. It comes with a generous side salad topped with colourful veggies and hummus. This meal is HUGE! As were all of the portions at Bliss Cafe.
The Bliss Burrito is a tortilla filled with beans, rice, cabbage, hummus, spicy fruit chutney, tomatoes, cilantro, lemon juice and salt. The burrito flavors are fanatics, the tortilla is soft and fresh and the meal sticks to your ribs in a satisfying way. Bliss café also serves bowls, salads and raw dishes, juices and smoothies along with the best chewy gluten free oatmeal cookie I have every tasted.
