How to Build a Balanced Breakfast for Busy Mornings
Back-to-school season always feels like a fresh start. The backpacks come back out, routines return, and suddenly everyone needs to be dressed, fed, teeth brushed and out the door at what feels like lightning speed. We had a bit of a tricky adjustment period because my kids were used to sleeping in till 8.
When mornings get busy, breakfast can easily become an afterthought or something you skip altogether. Maybe you grab whatever is easiest, or the kids eat something packaged on the walk or drive to school, or you realize halfway through the morning that you fed the kids but have barely eaten anything yourself!
The good news is that a healthy, balanced breakfast does not have to add more work to your morning.

I’m sharing some of my favourite make-ahead breakfast ideas on Breakfast Television on September 11, 2026. We’re talking about simple breakfasts you can prep ahead so that when the morning rush hits, you already have something delicious and nourishing waiting for you.
Once the segment is live, you’ll be able to watch the full Breakfast Television segment here.

What Makes a Balanced Breakfast?
One of the biggest things I encourage people to think about at breakfast is balance.
A muffin or piece of toast might be quick, but carbohydrates on their own may not keep you feeling satisfied for very long. They can spike your blood sugar and leave you struggling with that mid-morning energy slump.
Instead, I like to think about including three things:
Protein + Healthy Fat + Fibre-Rich Carbohydrates
You do not need to start counting grams or measuring and weighing everything on your plate. Instead, simply ask yourself what you can add to your breakfast to make it more balanced.
Having toast, could you add eggs?
Having fruit, could you pair it with Greek yogurt?
Love granola, Could you serve it with Greek yogurt instead of eating it by the handful?
Small additions can turn a simple breakfast into a much more satisfying and balanced breakfast.
And when mornings are busy, the other piece of the puzzle is preparation.
Make-ahead Balanced Breakfast Recipes I Shared on Breakfast Television
Healthy Homemade Granola with Greek Yogurt
The first recipe I’m sharing on Breakfast Television is my Healthy Homemade Granola, and I showed the audience how easy it is to make your own.
I love homemade granola because you get to control exactly what goes into it. My version is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and fibre-rich dates and has that delicious crunch we all want from granola.
Granola is also a perfect example of why I don’t like labelling individual foods as “good” or “bad.” Instead, think about what you can pair together to create a balanced breakfast.
I like serving my homemade granola with plain Greek yogurt for protein and adding fruit for additional fibre, nutrients and natural sweetness.
The best part is that almost everything can be prepared ahead of time. Make a batch of granola on the weekend, wash and prep your fruit and keep Greek yogurt in the fridge.
Instead of cooking breakfast on a hectic Tuesday morning, you are simply assembling it.

Pumpkin Pie Chia Pudding
If you love waking up to breakfast already made and want something you can eat on-the-go, you need to try my Pumpkin Pie Chia Pudding.
It takes just five minutes to prep before bed. Pop it into the fridge, and when you wake up the next morning, breakfast is waiting for you.
And since we’re heading into fall, you get that delicious pumpkin spice flavour at the same time!
This chia pudding is gluten-free, vegan and nut-free. Chia seeds provide fibre and healthy fats, which help make this a satisfying addition to your morning.
You can also prep several jars at once so you have breakfast ready for multiple days. In the morning, add your favourite toppings, and you are good to go.
For families, you could even set out a few toppings and let everyone customize their own chia pudding. Less work for you and more fun for them!
You’ll find the Pumpkin Pie Chia Pudding recipe in my free Make-Ahead Breakfast Cookbook.

Egg Bites
Not everyone wants a sweet breakfast, so I also wanted to bring a savoury make-ahead option to Breakfast Television.
My Egg Bites are made with eggs, almond flour, almond milk, mushrooms, spinach and creamy goat cheese.
Eggs provide protein while the spinach and mushrooms are an easy way to sneak some veggies into your morning.
These are especially helpful during the back-to-school rush because you can make an entire batch at once. Store them in the fridge or freezer and simply reheat what you need in the morning.
This is what I want people to remember about meal prep: you do not have to spend your entire Sunday in the kitchen for meal prep to make a difference.
If you have picky eaters, you can substitute the spinach and mushrooms for something you know they will eat. Think of this recipe as a template that you can modify to suit the taste buds of your family.

The Secret to a Better Breakfast? Make It Easier
When we think about eating healthier, it is tempting to focus entirely on what we should be eating.
But we also need to think about how healthy eating is actually going to happen in our real lives.
You can have the healthiest breakfast recipe in the world, but if it takes 30 minutes to make and you only have five minutes before getting everyone out the door, it probably isn’t going to happen. That is why I love these three breakfast ideas. Each one uses a slightly different strategy to make mornings easier.
